This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a Title I, Pre-Kindergarten school. We are the largest in the area, serving approximately 500+ students. Our school accepts those who are identified as academically high-risk, and we provide school readiness activities for 4 and 5-year-old children in full-day programs.
Most of our students come from low-income households.
We have a large dual language and military population, with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch meals each day. We have 18 intelligent, curious, and eager-to-learn students in our classroom from diverse backgrounds who will benefit greatly from any support given through DonorsChoose.org projects.
My Project
I would love my friends to experience taking care of a class pet! We want an easy little friend that we can watch live and grow and be mindful of in our classroom. We decided to get a hermit crab or even two! For that to happen, we need to be prepared. We have a class neighbor with hermit crabs, so we have done some research and have put together some things we think our hermit crab might need: tank, toys, hideaways, leaves, and books for us to learn more about hermit crabs.
The great benefit of having a class pet is teaching compassion – Children learn to care for another living creature.
They don’t always know how to interact with other creatures, and this can teach them to touch softly, feed an animal, and become in tune to their feelings. I would love to be able to add that aspect of responsibility to our learning environment! We would love to care for our new hermit crab friend!
