My Students

My students come to school with more stress than the average teenager due to the dangerous neighborhood in which they live in, and the sometimes transient and rocky home lives in which they share.

Because of this stress, my students are often viewed as "at-risk," a term that I personally abhor, but means they are "at-risk" for not becoming productive citizens.

I completely disagree with this stigma, as the students at my school, however typecast, are enigmatic, intelligent, talented, creative, boisterous, and, most importantly, open-minded.

My Project

Today I taught my summer school students a yoga lesson. I put towels down on the relatively dirty classroom floor, and for an hour, guided them through poses that strengthened their muscles, aided their flexibility, and gave them a chance to meditate and clear their minds. Afterwards, they asked when we would do it again. Because of their clearheadedness and overall enthusiasm for one of the world's earliest practices of strength and self-acceptance, I have decided to teach a yoga class once a week during my lunch period for students who are interested in the extremely beneficial practice of yoga. An hour later after I had mentioned this, the word had spread throughout the school, and I already had enough students signed up to have me give up my lunch period every day of the week. Therefore, I am requesting a set of yoga mats and a set of self-guided practice cards. I would be able to turn an abandoned classroom into a "zen-ter" where my students can turn to when life is tough.

The idea of teaching yoga is probably one of the simplest ideas that will make the biggest impact on student achievement, behavioral and discipline issues (have you ever taught in an inner-city school after the lunch period?

Aye.), and overall well-being. As a student of yoga myself, I have found a sense of inner-peace, have more consciousness over my body, have a better self-esteem, have lost weight, and have come to love the practice. I want that for my students.
