This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A classroom rug is an essential part of classroom activities. We need a place that students can come and sit and will know that they will be learning something new every time they come to the carpet!

I teach in a self-contained special education classroom.

Currently, I have 19 students in grades K-6th, with varying disabilities. Every single child is unique and brings so much to our classroom. Our school is a Title 1 school- which means about 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch.

My Project

Due to their range of abilities and ages, I had to split the students up within two classrooms, but we only have one rug. We tried using name tags tapped to the classroom carpet, but the kids peel up their names constantly. This classroom rug would help my classroom environment be more welcoming. Students will know they have a spot to sit, and that they are going to learn something new!

This project will help students have a specific space- a space that is theirs.

It will help my students interact with each other and learn social cues (not sitting too close to one another, not touching friends, etc.). By having a classroom carpet, I can help my students build positive interactions and help them to learn how to work together.
