I currently teach a non verbal autistic classroom grades 3-5. These students are absolutely amazing in their own ways with their own individual strengths. I am currently working on new ways to teach them to socialize and learn life skills in a comfortable environment.
My students continue to work on their social skills and communication as well as learning important life and independent skills.
My students can have a difficult time sitting still and this activity gives them the perfect blend of those skills in and outdoor environment that they can create as well as work in. my goal is for the students to continue to build this courtyard into their own comfortable place while teaching valuable life and social skills along the way!
My Project
This project will be a continuation of the first project which was to create a courtyard for my students to be comfortable and creative in. The first part of the project as a garden environment and the tools needed to work on valuable life skills like planting, cleaning, building, cleaning up and communicating.
This next step helps my students continue to build on this courtyard world and develop it to their own comfortable place that they will actively give directions in as to where we will put/build things.
For example, the picnic table can be used for games, planting, socializing, etc... But where to put them?? The students will help design this courtyard which will grow from the garden of things that they are planting.
