The science team led by Yucca, Stefan, Samuel, Vicki, Rahman, Nyein Chan, and others are determined to have a lab experience before they leave middle school. They have missed out on what made science fun when I was their age. They are excited about the possibility of a lab experience.
My school has not been able to build a science lab. My students' science experiences have been limited to books, videos, and occasional projects that are inexpensive and paid for by me. My students have always wanted a lab experience. They told me that nothing can compare to the real experience of dissecting animals. I told them that I agreed and to take the initiative and make it happen.
Since they have experienced the kind and generous support of DonorsChoose.org, they organized and planned this project. They are working with me to develop lesson plans and have the approval of our dean.
My students will develop skills through this project by having a lab experience that will teach them safety procedures and the proper use of lab equipment. In addition, they will learn the proper way to dissect and study animals. They will write a scientific report. These lessons will prepare them for science courses in high school. What I find most exciting is that a number of my students are interested in going into the fields of science and medicine. This project, will ignite them to go on to realize their aspirations and encourage others to consider science and medicine.
In Their Own Words
We are a group of students who want to give our class an opportunity to discover the anatomy of organisms. This experiment will allow us to understand more about biology by dissecting frogs and rats. With the equipment that we requested, we will be able to compare and contrast the biological composition of two different types of animals. This experience will enable us to go into high school with the knowledge of being able to dissect animals the proper way.
It all started as a small idea suggested by two students (Stefan and Yucca). We both wanted to experience a real-life dissection because of our future goals in life. Since a lesson plan has already been created, we will immediately begin the experiment after we receive the materials. Students will be required to observe the insides of the animals while dissecting, then compare and contrast the internal structure of each animal. Overall, this will be a new experience to most of the students.
We are very excited to be a part of this project. Since our school cannot provide us the equipment needed to dissect preserved organisms, we are disadvantaged compared to other schools in the area. We want to at least experience a dissection in real life in order to prepare us for high school. This will also contribute to other students in our school because the equipment will be passed down to them. This project will help future eighth graders in our school.
