This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to school every day despite their conditions at home. They are enthusiastic and always ready to learn no matter what. We are a Title I school that receives free breakfast, lunch, and supper for all students. Many of our students are English learners whose parents also lack the English language necessary for their success. Due to our district budget cuts, resources and materials are not available in the classroom. I want to give them a fighting chance to achieve the American dream!

My Project

Every year, our 4th graders host a Penny Harvest event where we collaborate with USC. It is a schoolwide activity where all students donate pennies and other denominations for three weeks. My students collect all the coins, and we have to count how much is collected daily. It is very time consuming so we would like a coin counter for the smaller denomination coins. We have collected over $2,000 in previous years, so you can imagine how long it takes to count change. The money collected goes to a local organization that helps the community. Last year, we donated to LA Mission and Dollars for Scholars.

We will also use the Kindle to go online.

We can look up apps for money games or just use it to access books related to money. For example, there is an app called Multiplication Genius where students learn to master their facts. There are so many valuable uses for a Kindle Fire in the classroom.
