My students need more wireless headphones and book bins to help us keep our books on CD organized.

"Never Give Up!" is something you will hear my students chanting in the classroom throughout the year. I teach first grade reading in a Title I school, in Washington DC, where 100% of my students receive free lunch. The challenges my students face as 6 year olds are surreal, however, they consistently rise to meet these challenges head on. At the beginning of the school year we discuss how learning to read might not be easy, and there are going to be times we want to quit, but no matter what, we need to make sure we "Never Give Up!"
My students beat the odds every single day.
Statistics says that the majority of my students won't be reading on grade level when they enter 3rd grade and will continue to fall further and further behind. This is why I think it is so important that my students build a solid foundation in literacy starting in first grade. Despite these statistics, 90% of my students leave first grade reading at or above grade level. They are closing the achievement gap and showing everyone how important it is to "Never Give Up!"
My students absolutely love the listening center we have set up in our classroom library. The listening center allows for them to listen to books on CD and access more complex texts. Since we use the center so much in my classroom, our headphones tend to wear out after the year is over. New wireless headphones will help next year's class continue to enjoy the listening center in our classroom library. The brightly colored book bins will help us continue to keep our library and listening center organized. An organized library makes it so much easier for my students to quickly find the books they would like to listen to.
