Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is a mix of special education students and special education students who are also English language learners. Many of my students are reading at a Kindergarten and 1st grade level, and if they do not move up significantly they may fall further and further behind.
All of my students receive free lunch.
Many are from single parent homes, and most come to school with no supplies and struggle every day. But they want better, they want to learn, and I believe they can. The students in my class are a diverse group. They come from hard working families, however all of them are below the standard reading level for their grade based on New York State Standards. This is in part due to disabilities, in addition to many who are English Language Learners and/or come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. This puts them at a distinct disadvantage, as compared to those who are fortunate enough to have been raised in a home where parents have provided the initial steps towards literacy.
My Project
My students need 4 sets of leveled readers at letters F and G.In order to improve student reading skills, I work with small groups on a daily basis. These small groups focus on improving reading fluency, comprehension and phonics depending on group needs. I also work with students before school and on Saturdays but limited resources are an issue. These groups cannot be successful without the necessary resources. My classroom has a very limited number of books at the students' levels and we are in desperate need for more leveled guided reading sets.
Fortunately for my class I have 3 aides in the room as well as the opportunity to work extra hours with students before school and on Saturdays who need this extra reading practice.
Once the classroom has received new sets of guided reading books the lives of the students will be majorly impacted. These books will provide me with the ability to continue working in small groups to target reading skills that students need to focus on.
