Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My ELL tenth grade students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second or third language. They are from more than 20 countries and speak more than 6 different languages.
My students are amazing recent immigrants who work part-time jobs, take care of family members, play sports and attend our after-school programs.
Inbetween their busy home and school lives, they are mastering a new language and literacy. One of the key components of our class is independent reading, and it is essential to have books that engage, inspire and challenge my brilliant students.
My Project
Many of my immigrant high school students are completing their first school year in America, and I want to make sure that my students have access to a great library of books for their first Black History Month.
My students need a variety of history books, poetry and graphic novels to celebrate Black History Month and the accomplishments of African Americans and the African diaspora.
This project includes the bestselling book Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History, a graphic novel on the Afro-Brazilian art of capoeira and collections of poetry in Somali and Dominican Spanish. My students are always eager to learn about the history of their new country, as well as about the history of their classmates' countries.
