Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic and enthusiastic 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Their inquisitive nature makes teaching science so much fun. Although many of my students struggle with language and academics, they are determined and have a genuine desire to learn. Their faces light up during each experiment; their eyes twinkle with excitement.
An exciting science experience transcends language and ability.
No matter which class or student I am teaching, with the proper tools they are engaged and ready to learn. A simple demonstration can prompt a plethora of questions and lead to authentic inquiry in a matter of moments.
My Project
This year, our school has begun enrichment clubs during the school day, and I have the amazing task of facilitating the Zookeeping Club! During our first meeting, I introduced the students to all of the animals in the science lab, and we began discussing some of the needs of each animal. We noticed on our trip around the room that the turtle tank was smelling a little foul. One of the first decisions the members of the Zookeeping Club made was to upgrade the filter for the turtle tank.
My students adore our red-eared sliders!
We want them to live long, healthy lives. The zookeeping club has decided the Fluval 360 canister filter and accessories will help maintain a healthy environment for the rescued red-eared sliders. Each week, the Zookeeping Club will assist in the monitoring and maintenance of the turtles' aquarium. With two growing turtles, we are bound to go through turtle food quickly; and the ReptoMin Food will ensure proper nutrition. The thermometer, will ensure proper water temperature, and the basking light will provide much needed warmth.
I want my students to understand the importance of taking good care of pets. Teaching students proper care of animals is important so that if they decide to purchase pets in the future they know the responsibilities involved.
