Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My art students are full of potential and imagination! I teach at a dual immersion school where 90% of the students are of Latino descent. As their art teacher, I love to include several projects from Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Peru, Chile, and many more. I think it is so incredibly important that they learn the beauty of these countries, and they develop a sense of pride from their heritage.

Beyond learning about the art and culture from these countries, we also learn about the art and culture from around the world so that we can develop a better understanding of the world around us.

My hope is that when my students leave my class, they will have an open mind to learn from those around them; and they won't disregard ideas or customs that are unfamiliar to them.

My Project

This year has been the first year that DIA has had a visual art program in a while. Since the pandemic, we have noticed that now, more than ever, students need a creative outlet to express themselves and their views on the world around them. And while the students have created AMAZING artwork so far, I can't wait to teach them all the things they can do in art class!

These supplies will help our students explore more avenues that visual arts can offer them; from weaving friendship bracelets, clay, printmaking, and so much more.

Not to mention that most of these supplies will last us years and years! I love my students so much and I want to offer them all that I can so it can inspire them to do more art in the future.
