This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an ICT classroom, which means we have a diverse population of students, some with special needs. Our students live in an area of the Bronx that is ridden with poverty. It is heartbreaking to see the effects of such poverty first hand. Some cannot afford simple things usually taken for granted such as pencils, backpacks or even winter jackets to keep them warm in the cold weather. Some arrive hungry because they were not able to eat a meal for dinner the night before.
Despite the hand they were dealt, our students are brimming with curiosity and an overall excitement for learning.
They love coming to school each day since for most this is the only form of structure in their lives. We try to make each day as fun and engaging as possible for them to help keep that excitement going. Most of our students come into the school year with no knowledge of letters, letter sounds, or numbers, and leave as readers, writers and mathematicians! The progress that can be made with the right kind of resources is amazing!
My Project
White boards and dry erase markers are crucial to our workshop model of teaching. Students actively engage in our lessons by using their whiteboards and markers. A lot of our markers in our classroom do not work, so we find that we spend more time replacing markers that do not work than having the students actually use their materials. The games and activities will be used for centers. In our classroom we have math centers and literacy centers where students spend time individually or in groups completing games and activities to sharpen their math and literacy skills. Having these new materials will help spark the excitement for learning in our students. Most of our students live at or below the poverty level, so receiving these brand new materials will truly be a memorable experience for them.
