Imagine what it would feel like to work hard for eleven years, to make straight A's, to be named soccer team captain, to be involved in five clubs, and to ultimately find out you would not make a competitive applicant for the college of your dreams? Help us become nationally competitive on the ACT!
My students are high-performing, low-income minority students.
Many of them qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are strong students; unfortunately, they are by no means college-ready. Our high school is a tough school--only 75% of students graduate, only 48% of those students go on to college, and a vast minority of those do actually make it to college graduation day. My students deserve more.
I am requesting college entrance exam prep materials. The only way my students can get better at these standardized tests is to expose themselves to as many test questions as they possibly can. Right now, we are working with a class-set of outdated books. I would love to diversify our resources, as well as increase our classroom library so students can actually check out these books and practice at home. Obtaining these materials would enhance my students' test preparation. They have strong grades, are incredibly motivated and involved on campus, and will write great personal statements. Their greatest barrier to college at this point is their overwhelmingly low performance on the ACT/SAT. They need all the support they can get-- please help us out!!
The support this project would provide would bear ramifications much larger than simply getting these kids into college.
These kids need this test prep so that they can go to college, change the trajectory of their lives, and, consequently, positively impact their community. We need to increase the accessibility of higher-education--starting with reducing the barriers of college acceptance. Once our students start getting in, we can start to build a college-bound culture at our school.
