Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are delighted when they listen to a fluent reading of their favorite stories. The intonation and expression that comes with a teacher's many years of practice or that comes easily to native English speakers is what draws my students to literature.

The English learner students in my inner city classroom come from homes with limited available literature.

The public library is miles away. Even when they find a darling title to read, they lack the proper fluency necessary to completely understand the book. Yet, these challenges do not curtail my students from having a natural love for reading and their beautiful eyes shine brighter when they are read to.

My Project

Research from the last decade indicated that if a child does not learn how to read by the end of first grade, they have a very minute chance of ever catching up to grade level peers! This is a scary thought when I look into my students' eyes on a daily basis. Therefore, having my students' senses engaged while at the same time making independent reading an exciting experience will be the result of using the 6 Tag Reading Systems in my classroom. Students will learn basic reading skills, phonics and word recognition, as well as comprehension skills. They will learn at their own pace, building much needed confidence. The systems will also allow me the the ability to individualize my instruction to meet the needs of my diverse learners during small group instruction, while engaging the rest of my students in meaningful, independent activities (Tag Reading System). I am also requesting 1 battery charger and 3 packs of batteries to be used with the Tag Readers.

My students need 6 Tag Reading Systems and the necessary rechargeable batteries.

This will help them continue to love reading and enjoy hearing stories. I hope that independently reading exciting stories, with words that talk, pictures that sing, and stories that live out loud will help all my students become fluent readers by the end of first grade!
