Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A new school year brings a fresh start for my Third Graders. They come excited, and perhaps a little nervous, to begin their journey of discovery. They will adapt to a new classroom, new personalities, overcome old fears and learn just how strong they really are.
Zig Ziglar said; “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” – My students arrive, hungry for food and knowledge.
All of my students will start off their day eating breakfast together in our classroom. They come from a diverse background, and have many daily challenges to contend with, not the least of which, is poverty.
With a population of 98% free lunch, many of my students don’t even have the essentials for the daily classroom expectations. I hope to provide them with a classroom they are eager to enter and the tools to succeed.
My Project
Math is learning if you try long enough, that every problem does have a solution. Dry erase pockets, and markers make the struggle a little more enticing. Laminated task cards for learning carousels get the students up and moving. In science, experiments need to be recorded. Crayola pencils last forever, and have colorful erasers that the kids just love. The snoopy sticky notes will encourage students to answer a question posed, to check for understanding. My students need the right tools to succeed. I have thought about the essentials for the new year, and hope to provide my Third Graders with them, keeping fun in mind.
The pencils, dry erase pockets and markers are used everyday, along with incentives to encourage that last ounce "can do" out of my students.
The games chosen for those rainy "indoor recess" days, continue to keep the learning happening, by encouraging cooperation and the practice of important social skills.
