My Students

Connecting you brain with your pen is always a daunting task. Next year, I will be teaching an Academic Writing class that prepares students for the ACT and for college writing. My students need a place where they can express themselves through the written word, and where they can have a dialogue

My students need a place where they can express themselves through the written word, and where they can have a dialogue with their teacher: someone who will listen, respond, guide, and give advice.

Since my school serves a 99% free and reduced lunch population, many of my students find their adult support though the school, and I want to continue being a role model for them through the craft of writing.

My Project

Therefore, I am requesting 130 composition notebooks for my students next year. In these notebooks, students will answer journal topics and create arguments, claims and evidence (think topics such as "Can men and women really be 'just friends?'" As well as document their fears, problems, and excitements for us to have a written dialogue each week. This will also be a place where they can write ideas and track vast vocabulary words they're interested in using in their writing.

Written fluency, coupled with reading strategies, are the highest indicators of collegiate success, and this is my goal for my students.

I love my students and feel as though they should get the same education as others, even though the school doesn't have a budget for supplies such as this. I find this project imperative to their learning and garnering that written fluency that will guide them through a successful life.
