Challenges? How about massive budget cuts in an inner-city school that continues to pursue the thoroughly attainable dream of acceptance to a competitive College or University. AP courses are the gateway, and my AP European students have averaged a 92% pass rate over the past five years.
What are my students like?
They are simply astounding and navigate challenges on a daily basis that would have brought me to my knees. We are a "majority-minority" school, and my class this year in Euro is looking to be number one in New York state again for the pass rate for African-American students. Our school is fighting that nearly impossible fight, and going into battle is all the more difficult without the proper weapons. I am hanging on to recycled texts book, barely, but we desperately need review books. Given our success over the past five years, I do not need to remind you of the value of these review books.
This is a simple equation: My students have been consistently 30 - 35% above the national average on this exam over the past five years. A huge part of their success is access to a quality review book; the one that I have selected has been hugely successful for me. I implore you to donate, and I can guarantee you a productive result.
More and more AP courses are becoming the benchmark for assessment of the serious high school student.
Consider the impact that an AP class, and a four or five on the exam can have on a young person who is an economically disadvantaged student beginning the college application process. Plus, my students get to read Luther, Kant, Shelly, Voltaire, Sartre, More, Hobbes and Locke. (among others) Not a bad deal!!! Peace. Mr. M.
