Help Us Anchor Our Learning with a Teaching Easel!

Our classroom needs a teaching easel so that we can conduct reading mini-lessons on our rug and create charts to refer back to throughout the year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 2nd grade in a rural area of FL. My school has a very high percentage of students who receive free or reduced price lunch. Many of the students' parents do not speak English at home. Our school is "full inclusion" which means special education students are fully included in regular ed classrooms. Also, we are a school without walls, which creates its own set of challenges. Each year, I elect to work with a group of students who have not performed well in first grade but are being "administratively placed" in 2nd grade rather than being held back. They are ALL below grade level and struggle with reading. It is my challenge to get them on grade level by the end of the year. But more importantly, I work hard to encourage them to enjoy learning and especially, reading.

For the past year or so, I have been doing a lot of self-directed professional reading on "Balanced Literacy" and "Readers' Workshop." As I try to restructure my Literacy block to better engage my students, I have been trying to regularly (2-3 times per morning) conduct short "mini-lessons" on comprehension and other important reading skills while sharing favorite picture books as read-alouds. I normally do this while my students sit in front of me on our classroom rug. Remember I mentioned I teach in a school without walls? Well, this makes it very difficult to do these mini-lessons! There is not a wall, bulletin board, or anything else I can attach chart paper to when I am teaching in this part of my room. My "walls" are created by bookshelves (see photo) - not very good for attaching things to!

A teaching easel will give me a place to create and refer back to our class-created "anchor charts" as we learn new concepts. They will later be hung around the classroom for all to see. A teaching easel will give me a place to work on a whiteboard or with magnetic materials when teaching whole group or small group lessons on our classroom rug. A teaching easel will help to divide the space in our classroom to create a "cozier" classroom library/reading area. A teaching easel will provide a work space for magnetic letters or whiteboard markers that students may use independently during our reading block.

As you can see, this one item will have MANY uses in our classroom! Please help me to support the needs of my students. They are a wonderful, enjoyable group and they work hard every day to improve their reading. But we need your help to really make it happen. You will make it possible for me to create a better structure and flow for my reading lessons, therefore helping my students to succeed!
