it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are quite extraordinary! This year I'm working exceptionally hard with a K/4 split. Yes... you heard that right... I'm teaching kindergarten remotely and fourth grade in person. My students are learning how to cope in these crazy times and doing a phenomenal job at it! Even though we are all not together this year, it's great to get to see everyone online. My students are really lovely kids—hardworking, funny, and bright. They live in a disadvantaged community, where resources are scarce and teachers have to work really hard to acquire supplies and plan enrichment activities.
My students do their best to comply with all that we require of them, which means a large amount of test prep and a small amount of recess.
As their teacher, I owe it to them to try to bring fun and creativity to our school year to the best of my ability. Many of my students have special needs, ranging from learning differences to emotional disturbances, and it's important to me to make learning fun and enjoyable for them.
My Project
These benchmark kits will help me evaluate the reading levels of my students this year. With such a large age range of students (4/5 in one class, and 8/9 in another) these kids will be able to read to me and I will be able to diagnose their reading levels and assess their learning needs.
The comprehensive assessment procedures and the variety of tools and options provided in Benchmark Assessment Systems 1 and 2 are rich resources for helping me systematically examine a child's strengths and needs, helping me think about the important link between assessment and instruction.
By using these kits, I will find detailed information about analyzing the reading behaviors of a child on an instructional-level text and tools for linking those behaviors to specific instructional goals in the Assessment Guide.
I can make a direct link from the data gathered with the assessment to The kit also provides professional development videos which would be another rich resource for me to use to examine students' needs. They are designed to help teachers conduct efficient and effective assessments, learn how to interpret the results, and connect results to instruction. Over time, observations made through the assessment, instruction designed to move the child ahead from level to level, and follow-up assessment will deepen my understanding of literacy development.
