This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As an academic intervention specialist, my students struggle with reading. Decoding, comprehension, and reading fluently all seem like impossible tasks. Most of my kids want to love reading, but they find independent reading overwhelming. The idea of reading a chapter book is terrifying and most of my students won't even attempt to do it. That's where these high/low books come into play. High/low books are high interest books with a lower reading level. High/low books also have very detailed graphics that help support the reader's comprehension and supports decoding. These high/low books will allow my students to access texts on their reading level while building their confidence, engagement, and motivation.
In addition, I requested decodable readers - these readers support the newest reading research that states leveled readers aren't as helpful as we hoped and decodable readers are the way to build life long readers.
This approach to learning how to read is called the Science of Reading (SOR). The SOR states that leveled readers are out and decodable readers are in. Decodable readers encourage students to use decoding skills, instead of memorizing text patterns. Once students are able to decode easily, they will be able to read fluently.
My plan is to send these books home with my students, just for fun. This will take the pressure off of reading in the classroom and allow them to build a love of reading. These books are specifically designed to be on their level, so hopefully it will take the struggle of reading away and replace it with a love of reading instead.
