Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How would you feel if you were so excited to write down your thoughts, yet you weren't able to grip a pencil? Frustrated, anxious, or angry are the most common feelings that come to mind. For many of our students, this is a common, everyday challenge that they must overcome.
I work in a new school as a literacy instructional coach.
Our school serves 128 excited, energetic, and amazing early childhood students with disabilities. All of our classes are self-contained, and students range in ages from 4 to 7. Our students come from some of the most under-served and underprivileged neighborhoods in the Bronx, but despite that, we hold high expectations for them and encourage them to always try their best and to reach for success.
Our staff is a group of highly motivated professionals who would go to the end of the moon for their students. They are constantly searching for new ways to give our students access to grade-level content that engages them on their developmental level.
My Project
These resources will help our students to become independent writers. Many of our students struggle with their fine motor skills... even holding a pencil can be a daunting task. Jumbo pencils will help them to properly grip a writing instrument so that they are able to become more independent in their writing and gain confidence in their work.
For many students, using rubber stamps to compose their writing will lessen their anxiety about writing and give them a fun way to use all of the phonics-based knowledge and instruction they are currently receiving in their classrooms. Seeing a student who previously couldn't "write" have access to another way to put down their thoughts is truly magical!
By donating to this project, you will help give a voice to a population of students who often feel like their thoughts and feelings go unheard.
Our students will be able to drastically improve their writing output in ways that are most meaningful for them. These tools will give our students a new way to communicate and will help them achieve appropriate literacy skills that they will use for the rest of their lives.
