I am a Special Education Teacher for a self-contained Autism class in high-needs school in Washington DC. I have 6 students ranging in ages 5 to 8. They range in the Autism Spectrum of every degree.

I am expected to teach my students to communicate however I have not been given any supplies. BoardMaker will help create worksheets, icons for communication books and programs that are tailored to each students need and skill level.

BoardMaker is a computer software program consisting of universal picture symbols for communication. The program can provide individual icons, worksheets using the icons and actual programs using the icons that can be tailored to each child's level of communication. This program will allow me to create worksheets and computer programs tailored to each students need and skill level. Having a universal picture system allows me to have consistency when teaching my students. It will also allow me to create communication icons for my non-verbal students to use in their communication books. This will aid in the facilitation of communication for these students.

You will make it possible for students who have no curriculum to learn. You will also make it possible for students who have little to no verbal communication skills to power to "talk" and communicate with all others.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
