Help Students Understand and Act-Out Shakespeare's, Othello

My students need class sets of Shakespeare's "Othello" (both the classic version and modern translations) to act-out the play (for special-ed and mainstream students).

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Making Shakespeare relevant to students is a challenging task, but also a valuable one. The situation and ideas in Othello (interracial marriage, racism, etc.) engage students and get them interested. However, it's even more difficult to teach Shakespeare without books. Please help me with that.

My students are great.

We have a curious class that works well together. Even though most of my students come from an economically disadvantaged area they certainly are not poor in spirit. What I like most about my senior class is that they are willing to take risks and ask questions. We have developed a good rapport with both teachers (this is a collaboratively-taught class). We have about ten special-ed. students along with 25 mainstream students. Our school is about 60% Hispanic, 30% White, and 10% Black. Everyone works well together in class and are supportive of different learning styles. Bringing Shakespeare's Othello to this group will be fun. Acting the play-out and really investigating the language and thematic ideas should get this group motivated and excited about Shakespeare.

My Project

If I was to receive these Othello books I would be able to bring Shakespeare to life for a class of students--it sounds corny, I know. But it's true. Othello is such a compelling play with powerful ideas dealing with race and perception and students would be able to connect with those themes. Too often "classic" literature does not bridge the generational gap, but with Othello, I think the themes help. By providing my students with a modernized version of the play along with the original version, you will help us better analyze the language. Instead of the language consistently being a barrier, we can move on to comprehension of the larger ideas Shakespeare was expressing. We don't have any copies of this play at my school and I would really like to study Othello instead of Hamlet or MacBeth. Your donation would help engage students and give them a positive experience with Shakespeare.

This is the first project I have ever put on donorschoose and I hope it is successful.

My students and I are in need of resources like many schools. If engaging students using classic materials like Shakespeare is valuable to you, I hope you support this project. Making Othello relevant and interesting is what I am hoping to do. Please help me get the books so I can try. Thank you for your help! My students deserve a chance to connect with this material. Please give them that chance.
