Help Students See Themselves in the Books That We Read
Help me give my students a library of read aloud books that allow them to see themselves in the stories they read. The characters in these books represent the students in my class.

My Students
I have the privilege of teaching a fantastic group of +20 first graders at a Title I elementary school that acts as a Community Hub, offering wrap around services to support the whole child and their families. We have over 20 different languages/dialects spoken at our school, with families coming from all corners of the world. The vast majority of students (close to 90%) qualify for free and reduced price lunches, therefore we are able to provide every student with a daily breakfast, lunch, and snack. I can't picture myself working at another school, the students are wonderful and the families and community members are extremely supportive.
My Project
This library of read aloud books will allow my students to see themselves in the stories they read. The characters in these books represent the students in my class, which is unfortunately not the case in most of the books our school district wants us to read. Our classroom's strength is our diversity, as we have students from four different continents speaking six different languages this year. Research shows that students will excel their literacy skills when they can better connect to the stories they read, and this set of books will provide the opportunity for my students to better relate to the characters they read about.
