Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th grade at an under-resourced public school in East New York. According to the New York City social studies standards, 5th grade students are expected to study "the geography, economics, and cultures of the United States, Canada, and the nations of Latin America, including the Caribbean, today." Unfortunately, my school does not offer any social studies material beyond test preparation books (for the New York State social studies exam in November). I was very lucky to receive a set of "United States History, Canada, Mexico, and Central America" textbooks published by Harcourt through Donors Choose. I would now like to leverage that investment by acquiring the additional resources that accompany the set of textbooks. The Assessment Program that coordinates with this set facilitates the evaluation of students' skills. It offers a variety of choices and information including standard tests, performance assessment, checklists, informal assessment, and a guide for portfolio assessment. This along with the "Take A Field Trip" videos would greatly enhance my students' understanding of U.S. history. The videos could be shown instead of the cartoons currently shown after lunch on rainy days, as a special treat after school, or to celebrate the completion of social studies units. I am determined to give my students a solid foundation before they move on to middle school. Please help me provide my students with access to the information they need to know.
