This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Exciting things are happening at our school! As our young students are learning to read in English, they are showing more and more interest in reading in Spanish as well! As with every voracious reader, they need... more books! Please help us build a Spanish library for them.

Our school is a charter school located in the under-served southwest side of Chicago.

Most of our students are Spanish-speakers or come from bilingual families. Around us, we hear Spanish and Polish every day. At AGC, our students learn about the world by asking lots of questions and trying new things. Our students have brought this to a whole new level asking, "Why can't we learn to read in Spanish as well?" The next step is to provide them with the opportunity to do so!

My Project

We are hoping to build a library of books in Spanish that students can read independently during class, and that they can choose to take home to read with their families. Because they are Kindergartners and first graders, we included leveled readers that they can read independently (not too long, not too easy, but just right)!

Have you ever heard anyone say "I used to speak Spanish when I was a kid, but not any more..." or "My grandmother speaks Chinese and I understand it, but I don't speak much of it, and definitely can't read it or write it..." Over the years we have seen many students lose their first language as they learn literacy in English, when we know they have the potential to learn both.

As educators, it is our responsibility to provide the opportunities so they can use their literacy skills in both languages.
