Our school is a charter public school located in the underserved Southwest side of Chicago. Most of our students are Spanish speakers or come from bilingual families. Around us, we hear Spanish and Polish every day. Our students never cease to amaze us, and we need to keep up with their learning. They are curious, creative, and always eager to go further. AGC students and families are proud of who they are and where they come from, and language is an important manifestation of this. As educators, we want to make sure we support students and families to maintain their heritage language. Most of our bilingual students are simultaneous bilinguals, which means they have been exposed to both languages since birth. It is our experience that many children who grow up hearing two languages eventually lose their Spanish, so we want to support the families to avoid this. We can do so by reading more books in Spanish and having them available for families.
