I am a 1st grade teacher in a very low literate school area of North Carolina. My students are just beginning their journey into reading. First grade is the premier year for teaching reading. In Kindergarten students learn the basics and in 2nd grade they practice. By 3rd grade students receive very limited reading instruction and are reading more for meaning and information. First grade is the main year for teaching reading skills, therefore materials to enhance the reading programs at schools is so very important. If we can teach them now, they will have the skills to be successful throughout their school career. That is why many of the requests I have read here are for books, books and more books. Please don't ever underestimate the importance of these items for teachers. You can never have too many books with which to entice young readers into practicing what we teach. One problem I have encountered in my school area is a high level of illiterate parents who are unable but not unwilling to help their children. My proposal is to purchase a reading rods machine that will help not only my student with practicing their phonics, spelling and reading skills but allow their parents to aid them without embarrassment. Who knows, maybe with the help of this machine, some parents may be brave enough to seek some reading help of their own. I cannot even imagine the impact this could have but I would love to see the difference this will make for my students. This machine takes simple connectable letters called reading rods and turns them into sounds and sentences. The children manipulate the whole system themselves. This reinforces almost every aspect of reading instruction and would be an invaluable tool with which to enhance my classroom.
