Help me give my students the novels that will keep them reading and asking for more! My students love a taste of everything - graphic novels, fantasy, dystopia, realistic fiction!
The students in my sixth-grade humanities classes represent a variety of learning needs, styles, and strengths. Our school is a large suburban school ten miles north of Indianapolis. It is comprised of fifth through eighth grades.
Sixth-grade Humanities is a three-period block of time, in which students explore reading, writing, and social studies.
We approach the study of Humanities in a interconnected thematic exploration using project-based learning, student direction, and collaboration.
My language arts instruction is structured around a year-long plan of shared reading experiences, literature circles based on thematic or historical study, and independently chosen novels during which students apply what they have learned to books they have chosen. My students are active participants in the choices of materials we use, from the novels they read to the TED Talks we watch to the projects they research. Students have learned how to research, present, and recommend the materials and methods we use throughout the Humanities block.
My Project
My students have an insatiable appetite to read - they have asked for titles from every genre and every part of history!
These titles tell the stories of the people and the places that my students want to explore.
I have asked the students what they are looking for, and they have responded. They want to try a little bit of everything- realistic fiction, graphic novels, historical fiction, and dystopia. And as a teacher, I want to give my students the tools to travel outside our classroom walls and learn about the stories of place and people that make our world so rich and fascinating!
The greatest gift a teacher can give a student is the perfectly matched book at the right moment. These titles offer that chance!
