My students dive into cultures and civilizations throughout history and from all corners of the world. They learn to become readers, writers, and thinkers who make connections between the characters in their books and the leaders and villains in history. My students have become advocates in choosing the novels they read in our literature study, exploring books and characters they can connect to in order to examine the stories, themes, and "big questions" that all readers wonder about. With the privilege and responsibility of novel choice, my students become leaders of their group discussions, in our class community, and in the direction of their own learning. When given more choice in novels to read, children are more likely to dive in and recognize the connections that help them find their place in the world around them and in the timeline of history.
