Help Start the First Chemistry Course At Our School!
My students need equipment such as a chemical cabinet, electronic balances, goggles, aprons, and gloves in order to safely conduct chemistry experiments.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school was K-8 and recently expanded to high school. I am proud to lead the first high school chemistry course ever offered. These students are eager to feel like they are truly getting the "high school experience," which includes challenging science classes with hands-on labs.
This urban public school is truly special.
It is in an area where violence is prevalent, however this school maintains a safe environment with high expectations conducive to learning. Over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch and a large percentage of students are English language learners.
These students want to feel like they are getting the "high school experience" they deserve. They know that high schools should offer a myriad of science classes with labs that prepare them for college. All young scientists need hands-on activities to help them understand abstract concepts, especially English language learners. Labs and demonstrations provide an opportunity for increased student engagement and they encourage critical thinking.
My Project
All the materials I am requesting will be used directly for chemistry experiments. It is recommended by College Board that at least 25% of class time be dedicated to laboratory experiments. Currently our school does not have any chemistry specific materials, because this will be the first chemistry class!
Students will conduct at least one lab a week to help make the abstract concepts of chemistry come alive. The equipment, such as electronic balances, and safety gear, such as gloves and goggles will be used for almost every single experiment.
Your donation will enable my students to engage in the first chemistry class at this school.
I have seen first-hand how experiments can change a student's relationship with science. A lab can make something go from abstract and intangible to real and impactful. It also provides an opportunity for English language learners to experientially assimilate new vocabulary. Students also become more curious about pursuing a major or career in science after experiencing laboratory experiments.
