Every year, my 8th graders dive into performing scenes from William Shakespeare's ¨A Midsummer Night's Dream.¨ This serves as their first taste of Shakespeare before they enter high school, so it's crucial that the experience is engaging. Theatre is about more than just reading words off a page; it's about bringing characters to life. This unit is always a favorite among my students, and they often come back years later to talk about how much they enjoyed it!
To increase comprehension and engagement, we need costumes for the students to perform in!
Costumes play a crucial role in helping students embody their characters, making the experience more immersive and memorable. For students with special needs and language barriers, performing in costume can be particularly beneficial. It provides them with a visual and tactile aid to better understand and connect with their character's motivations and emotions. Additionally, it can help break down language barriers by providing context clues and visual cues, making the text more accessible and comprehensible.
Unfortunately, not every student in our district can afford to bring their own costumes and props from home. That's why I'd like to be able to lend out costumes to students who are unable to buy their own for the project. This ensures that every student, regardless of financial circumstances, can fully participate in this enriching experience. It's about inclusivity and giving all students the chance to shine.
