My students need one small-group carpet to enjoy comfy read-alouds, guided reading and independent reading (instead of linoleum)!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Title I school serves students who are living in a historically economically oppressed area. As a reading resource teacher, I work with Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students who have been identified as needing additional support. Many of my students have anxiety and stress around letters, reading and other literacy activities, even at their young age. Less than 30% of the students in the upper grades are proficient at their grade level, and we are working to change this for all students. The excellent primary classroom teachers and I are working together to challenge, encourage and individually differentiate for these students to reach reading success!
Rather than reading a story with squirming Kindergarteners sitting in 3rd grade chairs or having students sit on the extremely unpleasant linoleum, I want to make reading a more inviting, safe activity—on a small group rug!
A calming rug will provide a cozy area for various reading activities for my students. We will read-aloud as a group, have small-group guided reading circles, and also serve as a center space for individuals to sprawl down with a good book. In addition, the rug will allow the students for the Saturday Scholars tutoring program the opportunity to have similar comfort during their focused time.
I’ve picked out the most affordable rug possible, so this is a small price for a big impact! Your donation will make it possible for students to know they are valued in this place, and also ensure that they have a comfortable spot to, in turn, value reading.
