Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you are one of our students, you are part of the family. Our school has a tradition of pride and excellence as well as a tight-knit community. Our students love to participate in learning opportunities of all kinds--especially reading experiences that deepen their knowledge and connect them with others, their community, and with history.

Our students are in two categories: voracious readers or future voracious readers.

Our community efforts are often literacy-centered, service-centered, or designed to enrich their academic curiosities and course work such as exploration, clubs, or reading in a group so they can enjoy and learn together. Our students have enjoyed multiple author visits, which have both motivated and propelled reading. Our students LOVE to meet authors and come out to author visits both in person and virtual. Right now, virtual visits are our only option. But we will take it!

My Project

Our students are reading incredible graphic novels: both the March series by Rep. John Lewis, Andrew Aykin and Long Way Down written by Jason Reynolds and illustrated by Danica Novorgorff.

Our students have turned out in droves for virtual authors and illustrators during this pandemic; as we move into the winter months, we are hoping to offer them more of these incredible opportunities to talk to the authors and illustrators who created the books they love.

These books are powerful pieces of literature telling the stories both through words and images, covering important topics such as civil and voting rights, gun violence, grief and loss, racial and socioeconomic injustices. This project helps me, as their teacher librarian, provide multiple ways to engage our students in positive learning opportunities that help them connect each other and understand history and the present world we live in
