My Project

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about this project. I am an Itinerant Preschool Special Education teacher for a rural area in Virginia. Since I am a traveling teacher, I need help building my materials for my students.

My sweet students are 2–5 years old and all have developmental delays.

A developmental delay means they have a deficit/delay in one or more of the following areas of development: academic, language, motor, and adaptive. My students' delays make it difficult for them to navigate their environment like typically developing peers, making specialized toys and materials necessary for their learning and development.

The preschool years are a beautiful time full of learning and exploration, which provides a foundation for the rest of their lives. My students' delays make it difficult for them to navigate their environment like typically developing peers, making extra educational materials necessary to help in their learning and development. I work on helping them express their feelings appropriately and communicating their wants and needs. This is often done through play-based opportunities since most are very limited in their communication skills.

The wooden houses, building blocks and a fire station playset along with other materials will help them work on their fine motor skills, learn colors and shapes in a variety of ways, and most importantly help them better communicate through play. Although some toys are provided by the school system, I am very limited in what I have since there are three other traveling teachers I work with. I do not have many personal materials and we usually share, meaning a lot of times what we need is unavailable to use. With this project and the right materials, my students would have better support in the educational environment that would otherwise not be available to them.
