My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I work with students who are faced with several challenges in school and outside of school. Many are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Despite this, they still come to the classroom often with a smile, eagerly anticipating, "What are we drawing today?"

The students I work with are direct, active, require positive encouragement, clever, and genuinely want to succeed.

I want my kids to feel welcomed, noticed, validated and celebrated when they come into my classroom, regardless of their interest in art or what their life outside of school looks like.

My Project

We've run into a paper problem in the art room at Lawton. I ordered over $300 worth of paper in November with the money I was given by the district. The paper was backordered for months, delaying the purchase. Eventually I was told by the supplier that the paper I ordered has now been discontinued. Now, in February, I am without the bulk order of paper that was to last us through this school year. I am not allowed to place another order, despite the money for the paper never being used.

We really need some thick, quality, art paper if we are to continue to use our awesome wet supplies like watercolor, tempera paint and oil pastels.
