This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a School Counselor. Finley is my Therapy Dog, who works at our Title 1 inner city school three days per week. Finley is a multi-lingual therapist (he understands everyone), he accepts all, never laughs at anyone, and always keeps secrets. All students love to cuddle and talk to Finley. He regularly enjoys play time with our EC (special needs) students. Finley has even helped many students and staff successfully overcome their fear of dogs. Because all Pre-K through 5th-grade students love to interact with him, he has decreased the number of tardies and absences at our school. He really plays so many roles here!

Finley is the only Therapy Dog "on staff" in our district.

This means that there is no assigned funding for him. I pay for his liability insurance, uniform, treats, crate, bed, toys, medical care, and more on my own to make this program possible. A new uniform will help better identify him as a therapy dog. The treats and toys will be used by the students as they play with him during therapy. The treats also reinforce his good behavior. The books will be read to students to help them understand him and his role. They can also read the books to him and become more confident readers.
