Warning! Students at our middle school, a 5th-8th charter school located in a low income community in California, have caught a bug... a reading bug. They can be found reading, giggling, and furiously page turning in all of our classrooms, at all hours of the day.
As the eighth grade English teacher, I am responsible for helping to stock the school library with books that will prove irresistible to students in all grades.
Research shows that the best way to get students to improve their reading comprehension and vocabulary is to READ. In order to read, they must have books which grab them and encourage them to keep going. We have found that books in a series have been exceptional for getting our students' interest, and sustaining it through the series.
We have requested books from some of today's most popular series, including the "Twilight" series, the "Maximum Ride" series, the "39 Clues" series, the "Franny K Stein" series, the "Bailey School Kids" series, the "Goosebumps" series, and the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. These books will significantly enhance the quality of our school library, and therefore improve the reading comprehension and development of our 250 students, across all four grade levels.
Please help our students sustain their momentum! They are becoming avid and voracious readers, and with your help in providing new, high-interest books, our students will ALL become better readers.
