They have dramatically increased participation by removing the fear of making mistakes—students know they can quickly erase and try again. The pictures I shared capture our very first lesson with them. To build a solid routine, students started off with drawing birds and listening for my cue to lift and reveal their \"answers.\" This fun activity helped set clear expectations for how we use, hold, and care for our new materials. The boards also give me real-time feedback so I can adjust my teaching on the spot.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, having personal copies of Seedfolks made Unit 1 in ELA truly unforgettable. Having their own books allowed students to annotate, analyze character growth, and explore deep themes of community.
