Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I think it is safe to say that our listening centers (until 1 week ago) were from the same year our school was built, 1959! We finally decided to join the ever advancing technological world with brand-new CD/DVD listening centers. There is only one problem, we have no books on CD!
My class is diverse, sweet, and eager to learn.
I have 11 students whose native language is Vietnamese, a language I was not the least bit familiar with until this year. I am constantly looking for fun, engaging activities that can help build up their English vocabulary as well as keep them on-level. Listening centers are a great tool that keep the students engaged in a high-quality literacy experience that goes beyond language barriers.
My Project
English is the first language for 4 of my 21 students. Vietnamese and Spanish are 2 languages of which I do not speak either. Books on CD that correlate to the letters of the alphabet will help refine English skills while familiarizing students with the sounds the letters make. The books on CD will allow the students to visually see and track the print as well as audibly hear the spoken words. Kindergarten is a time where foundations are built. I want to help reach their learning style while building a solid foundation in the English language, and what better place to start than with the alphabet.
I would hate to see such an amazing piece of technology with so much educational potential go to waste because we do not have the resources to fund the materials needed.
This full set of books on CD will not only impact my class this year, but for many more years to come.
