Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a teacher at a public Title I high school in New York City, and the majority of our students come from low-income families. Many of them have never even been outside of NYC. My coworker and I established a Hiking Club at our school over ten years ago because we believe our students deserve to enjoy nature. We became trained in Outdoor Leadership and in Wilderness First Aid, which prepared us to lead our students on hiking and camping trips.

Over time we have built up our high school’s Hiking Club, and we now lead one weekend hike per month.

We usually have between 10-20 students join us for each hike, and we take the train outside of New York City to visit trails in upstate New York and in New Jersey. We spend the day exploring nature, building community, learning about the environment, and moving our bodies! Our hikes are a completely new experience for our students, and we are thrilled to be able to provide them with this opportunity to get out of the city, get out of their comfort zone, and experience nature.

We are concerned about our students’ safety and comfort due to the lack of appropriate hiking gear. They wear what they have, but they don’t have the clothing that would make hiking more comfortable and safe, including raingear, fleece layers, hiking packs, and warm socks.

We want to build our own Hiking Gear Library that students can borrow for each hike. We believe that our hikes have a huge impact on our students and they say that they are always looking forward to the next hike, and we want to continue our program. Any support we might receive can make a huge difference in our program and these students’ lives.
