This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are friendly, hard-working, intelligent kids who love to learn through reading and hands-on activities. They are extremely driven to reach their goals, and they realize that the path to college begins in elementary school.
Most of all, my students are the perfect examples of resiliency.
Many of my students face challenges at home that may affect their performance or future. Our school is located in an extremely impoverished neighborhood where the students are faced with many obstacles to learning. Despite this, they show up and do their best to work through the struggle every day. We do the best we can to prepare them for their futures, and meeting their basic needs by providing them with clean clothes and other necessities when needed will remove a barrier for their learning and enable them to focus on learning the math, reading, and leadership skills they need to succeed.
My Project
With our school being located in a neighborhood with a high level of poverty, our kids often come to us needing more support to be successful than students who come from more affluent neighborhoods. Our Family Resource Center Coordinator is an amazing resource for our kids, and she works hard every day to remove barriers to learning for our students by meeting their basic needs.
It's hard to focus on reading or math when your basic needs are not being met.
By providing our students with the things they need like clean clothes that fit, shoes, hair supplies, food, and so many other things, our Family Resource Center Coordinator makes learning possible for our kids. Every student deserves the chance to learn. Removing these barriers for our kids levels the playing field and allows our students to focus on what they should be focused on...learning.
