Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm an elementary and middle school art teacher at a bilingual charter school. Students receive education in both English and in Spanish, wherefore by the time they move onto high school, they will be fully bilingual. We are a Title I school, with 90% percent of our students coming from low income families.
For many of my students, my classroom is the only place they can create art.
I hope to be able to provide them with quality supplies to ensure they can truly express themselves, learn new art techniques, as well as create art from their culture.
My Project
As a new semester approaches, I want to give my new classes the opportunity to create art using new materials. Teaching 400+ students means that my supplies get used up quickly. I'd rather not start a new semester with damaged brushes and dried up markers.
When my students see that the materials they are using are new, they feel special and know that they are valued.
No more searching for colors or having to use copy paper to draw and paint on!
I hope to help my students learn and love the art process, and help them express themselves. These new materials are crucial in making this happen. . By purchasing new Crayola markers and Sargent Art Colored pencils, I will be able to teach my students color theory (how colors are created, and their relationship with each other. Using newsprint, which is very economical, I can work with my students to re-enforce drawing from observation, a very important art skill. We will be able to work on drawing still lives, gesture drawings of mannequins, as well as themselves.
