I need financial support to attend this intense summer fluency camp that will help me further develop my expertise and therapy skills to support the students I work with on a daily basis.
I have been a Speech and Language Pathologist in the public school system for 16 years. I have my undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and my Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I love what I do and I am always looking for creative, innovative ways to work with my students.
My goal each year is to make my students' school experience the best part of their day.
I have always worked with students who have a variety of learning strengths and challenges. Every year I have at least a handful of students who struggle with stuttering and fluency disorders. Interestingly, despite my extensive knowledge in the area of speech and language, I have only taken two courses in the area of stuttering and fluency disorders. This area is a big hole in my professional development that needs to be filled. While I may have workbooks and basic therapy tools to help students become as fluent as possible and comfortable in speaking situations, I don't have the necessary knowledge base and confidence to support these students as best as I can.
My Project
I would like to attend Camp ShoutOut, an intense eight-day camp that will provide me with information regarding the best practices that speech and language pathologists are using when working with students who stutter and/or who have fluency disorders. SLP's who attend this camp will participate in an intense two-day training to help prepare them for working with the campers once they arrive. SLP's will be taught the most effective therapy techniques and strategies to be used with students who stutter or those who struggle with fluency disorders. SLP's will have guided practice facilitated by experts in the field. Throughout the week, SLP's will work in groups with others professionals and campers as they navigate the ups and downs of the communication world.
