My Students

I teach special education students how to communicate. I run several groups where students attend to learn how to improve their speech and language skills. Often these students are frustrated because most people can not understand them when they speak or they have language delays and do not understand directions given to them in class, or social situations.

In our groups we work hard on improving our communication skills so the students can grow up to be great communicators, which is an important skill to have when finding a career.

My Project

Help us to organize our brains by providing hands on materials to use while working on speech and language concepts such as categorization. Often times our students with language disorders struggle to be able to categorize objects. This affects their ability to find words and information in their brains as quickly as other students. If your brain is unable to categorize it is like a messy bedroom, but when you can categorize information it is like an organized filing cabinet which makes it much easier to find things! This project will help create and organize themed therapy materials. Using themes such as outer space, circus, apples, etc. provide a way for students to relate to what they are learning and give context that can carryover into the classroom. Storage bins, cooperative games, books, focused therapy cards, and hands on materials will support students in learning these important speech and language concepts.

Our classroom is in need of organization as well!

We need some organizational bins to keep our classroom and lessons organized as well. This will give me more time to spend with students rather than looking for and gathering materials and the students will be able to access the materials independently while doing child lead therapy.
