This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Global Warming is a reality and my students are eager to combat it. There are many engaging labs surrounding climate change. Without these materials, learning about climate change would be just another boring textbook chapter. My students want to take action and need the materials to do so.
At my high school, all of our students are recently arrived immigrants who have been in the country for fewer than four years.
They are all learning English and striving to graduate high school on time. More than 95% of our students qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch and almost 25% of our students are refugees from countries like Liberia, Burma, and Bhutan.
Our students are at the highest risk of dropping out of high school--very few English Language Learners graduate from high school and go to college in California. We started our public school to reverse that trend. We work to ensure that students are learning English in all of their classes so that they can graduate on time and go to college.
My Project
With these lab materials, students will be able to see what greenhouse gases cause global warming, how environmental stresses affect plant growth, and what kind of alternative energy solutions are out there. As they engage in this topic, they will begin developing their own solutions to our current energy and environmental crisis. They will become ambassadors of a greener world.
Supporting this project would mean everything to my students who want to make a difference in the world.
Through this unit, my students will learn about service and giving back to their community by taking care of the environment.
