At my high school, all of our students are recently arrived immigrants who have been in the country for fewer than four years. They are all learning English and striving to graduate high school on time. More than 95% of our students qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch and almost 25% of our students are refugees from countries like Liberia, Burma, and Bhutan. Our students are at the highest risk of dropping out of high school--very few English Language Learners graduate from high school and go to college in California. We started our public school to reverse that trend. We work to ensure that students are learning English in all of their classes so that they can graduate on time and go to college.
