Help Nonverbal Students Learn to Talk Using Technology!

Help me give my students two iPads, one for each classroom I serve. These devices will be loaded with software used to teach nonverbal individuals how to communicate their wants and needs using picture based language.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a K-8 Title I public school in Phoenix, Arizona. Most of the children that attend our school qualify for free and reduced-price lunch due to a low level of family income. We belong to a diverse community of learners from many backgrounds and have many families speaking Spanish as well as other languages too. Our families struggle to provide basic needs (food, clothes, shelter) for their children, and we try to support them in these areas as well as to provide a world class education.

My nonverbal special education students have diagnoses such as Down Syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy-- but they can talk, they just need the right tools.

We have two classrooms, a kinder through third grade class and a third through eighth grade class-- that are full of smiles, laughter, and learning every day.

My Project

Many of our nonverbal students can communicate- just not verbally. Our students need assistive technology to communicate. These iPads will be used throughout the day by the teacher in each classroom to model language on picture based software. With picture-based support, a child with autism who cannot verbally speak can now point to a picture to communicate. A child in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy who cannot speak or point can use their head or their foot to tap a switch that connects to the iPad to communicate their message. Just because our students cannot 'talk' doesn't mean they don't have a lot to say!
