Many of our nonverbal students CAN communicate- just not verbally. Our students need assistive technology to communicate. These iPads will be used throughout the day by the teacher in each classroom to model language on picture based software. With picture-based support, a child with autism who cannot verbally speak can now point to a picture to communicate. A child in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy who cannot speak OR point can use their head or their foot to tap a switch that connects to the iPad to communicate their message. Just because our students cannot 'talk' doesn't mean they don't have a lot to say! Witnessing a child speak their first words is a magical moment. It is even more powerful when one has seen these students struggle to communicate for years. But with the magic of assistive technology, we can change that. Everyone deserves a voice. Thank you for helping my students find their voice!
