Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students of W. Elementary School are unique and lovable in so many ways! We have an ELL population of approximately 70% and FARMS rate of 80%. This is my first year at this school as a school counselor and many of the students I work with have encountered adverse childhood experiences/trauma that impact their social/emotional regulation skills. Additionally, as a result of these experiences, their self esteem is impacted greatly.

These students are special because despite some of their difficult circumstances, they are truly the most lovable, humble, and caring students, yet there remains a GREAT need for materials that address social and emotional awareness skills.

Our students not only deserve it, but will require it in order to be prepared beyond elementary school.

My Project

Many of our students desperately need to learn ways to appropriately communicate their feelings and help self-regulate. I believe that learning social/emotional skills is just as important as academic learning, if not more! It is essential that our students, who come from a variety of different family backgrounds/situations, learn how to effectively communicate with peers and families. I would use the social skills books while working with students individually, in small groups, as well as during classroom lessons. In my position, I work with all grade levels, so it is important to use common language with them year to year to help improve understanding. I also work with varying levels of learners, so the iPad will help aid all types of learners that I work with on a daily basis, using apps when I work with individual and groups of students working on improving social skills and emotional regulation.
